William Barlow

William Barlow was born in Woolwich,Kent on the 10th of may,1812 and died at age 90 on the 12th of november,1902. His father was Peter Barlow, a famous physicist and mathematician. The environment he grew up in allowed him to have private education and he began to study civil engineering with his father at the age of sixteen.He completed Isambard Kingdom Brune's Clifton Suspension Bridge. Following the Tay Bridge disaster he sat on the commission which investigated the causes and designed the replacement Tay Bridge. Barlow was also an inventor and experimenter, patenting a design for a rail and carrying out investigations on the use and design of steel structures.
