Edward Estlin Cummings was born on October 14, 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was born in an Unitarian family and found leanings towards Christ ever since he was little.  His journals were always filled with poems and scripture. He wanted to be a poet since he was 8 and wrote poetry everyday till he was 22.

Career With Writing

He went to Harvard and developed an interest in modern poetry which ignored conventional grammar and syntax, aiming for a dynamic use of language. Then he got a job working for a book dealer. XLI poems were published and made a huge reputation with the poems that the publisher was working with.

As is the Sea Marvelous

as is the sea marvelous
from god’s

hands which sent her forth
to sleep upon the world

and the earth withers
the moon crumbles
one by one
stars flutter into dust

but the sea
does not change
and she goes forth out of hands and
she returns into hands

and is with sleep….

the breaking

of your

my lips
