ULYSSES S. GRANT

Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States of America, and he was the general of the North during the Civil War. He was born on 4/27/1822 in a two room cabin in Ohio. He attended college at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and graduated on July 1, 1843. He married Julia Boggs Dent and had four children. He was nicknamed "Unconditional Surrender" because he would not surrender to the South. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on 4/9/1865. Representing the Republican party, Grant was President from 1869-1877. At the age of 46, he was the youngest person to be elected president. During his presidency, he fought the Ku Klux Klan and enforced civil rights. He died on 7/23/1885 of esophageal cancer in New York.
