Athens, Ohio is known as one of the most haunted places in the country. Lucky for me, I experienced it first hand. There are a variety of buildings and places at Ohio University that all have eerie and spooky histories. The most well-known is The Ridges. If you have never heard of The Ridges, here's the brief scoop: Basically The Ridges was a Mental Facility that was open from 1874 until 1993. There are a lot of myths and stories from the Asylum, including the fact that Lobotomies were conducted there. Any-who, most of the buildings at The Ridges have since either fallen apart, been renovated or torn down. The largest most well known building that has not been renovated is the old tubercular (TB) ward. Despite it's history and increasingly bad health hazards students would sneak into the old shut down TB Ward to witness the hauntings from the old insane asylum. I was one of those students.

My friends and I decided we needed to see the TB Ward for ourselves, to believe the ghost stories that so many had described to us. It was dark, cold and fall was in the air. We entered at our own risk. There was broken glass and wooden panels everywhere and graffiti written all over the walls. It was obvious that many students had been here and vandalized the property. There were old pieces of furniture and debris everywhere. My friends wanted to walk up the frail and creepy staircase into the dark abyss - I refused. Waiting behind for my friends, alone in the debris mess-filled hallway I experienced what I claim to be my encounter with paranormal activity. I felt a gush of wind, yet no windows were open. Suddenly it became extremely cold and I felt something. Like a whisper. Without hesitation I screamed for my friends and we immediately left the premises. Unfortunately because so many students were eager to explore this building, it has since been torn down. While at OU I had experienced other creepy occurrences; doors opening in the dorms, lights flickering and windows opening.

There are some great websites that detail the haunting in Athens, OH, but this one in particular has some great stories about Ohio University: http://www.forgottenoh.com/OU/ou.html
