Literary Elements- Climax

By Tatum Brown

Definition

Climax is the turning point of the story; emotional high point. The moment of greatest tension at which the outcome of the story is to be decided. In dramatic structure climax designates the turning point in the action, the CRISIS that changes everything to come.

Examples

-Cinderella: In Cinderella, the climax of the story could be debatable, but the true climax is when the Prince puts the glass slipper on Cinderella, the mystery girl he has been trying to find from the ball.

-The Hunger Games: After all of the other tributes have deceased, Katniss and Peeta are the only two remaining. When a change in rules takes place, instead of fighting each other till the death to become the one victor, they threaten suicide. The two are quickly stopped by the Gamemakers and are both crowned victors.
