Characteristics of Elements
The characteristics of elements do not depend on the amount of elements presented. This includes some physical properties like boiling point melting point and density. Also there is chemical properties like reacting with acid.

Elements can identified by their unique set of properties.
Classifying elements from there properties
Metal - an element that conducts heat and electricity well. Malleable -hammered into sheets. Ductile - pulled into thing wires.
Nonmetal - an element that conducts heat and electricity poorly. Solids tend to be brittle and un malleable.
Metalloid - an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals Semi-conductors. Some are shiny, but some are dull.

Alot elements take part in chemical changes easily, so they are rarely found alone in nature.

How a compound can be broken down into its elements
They require heat or an electric current. Some break down in to there elements during chemical changes. Also some break down into smaller compounds during chemical changes.

How a mixture can be broken down into different substances using common mixtures
Distillation - separates a mixture based on the boiling points of the components. Water from salt water.
Magnet - magnet will pick up items in the mixture that are magnetic and leave behind the ones that are not. Separating iron and aluminum.
Centrifuge - separates mixtures by the densities of the components. Different parts of blood.
