Social Studies

Celebrate Freedom Weekwas a Huge success! Learners across the district participated in activities and learning experiences that focused on our country’s history and the rights we enjoy as Americans! We also had over 100 tweets from CISD educators go out about Celebrate Freedom Week. Please take a look at hash-tag: #cisdcelebratefreedom to see the many great activities and learning experiences that occurred in CISD!

Career and Technical Education (CTE)

New Tech High @ Coppell’s CTE facilitator Carolyn Province has started a NTH@C DECA chapter this year. Ms. Province brought years of DECA advisor experience when she joined Coppell ISD for the 2014-2015 academic year. This program, which also has a chapter at CHS, provides tremendous opportunities for leadership and career development.

Did you know that every year, the last week of September is known around the country as “Banned Books Week”? No, the purpose is not to condone the banning of books, but to celebrate Intellectual Freedom, and the individual’s right to choose what they read.

In CISD, there is a formal Reconsideration Committee of teachers, librarians, administrators, and parents who would meet should there be a challenge of any sort of material available in CISD schools. Our School Board’s official policy, EFA-Local, includes specific steps to be taken in case of a challenge. The principal and the librarian, or other professional involved in the choice of the material, are involved in the first step of the process. Their responsibility is to try and resolve the matter informally by explaining the school selection process, the criteria for selection, and the qualifications of the professional who selected the questioned material. In no case, would a book or material be pulled from use before all the steps in the policy have been taken.

Please let me know if you ever need assistance with questions regarding library materials.

Banned Books Week is September 21 27.

CISD will continue its initiative of training all campus and district administrators in Crucial Conversations. I will be serving as the district point person along with our original team of district trainers Rhonda Carr, Linda Cook & Tracey Wallace. Laurie O’Neill will be joining the training team this fall. We will be adding new trainers to our Crucial Conversation training cadre.

We will be offering an initial 2-day Crucial Conversations training in November, as well as several educator trainings on a variety of campuses. If you are a new administrator or have not been trained, then please sign up in Eduphoria for this training. We will offer additional training in the spring, but the cost of the materials will be going up in January.

Training is open to all staff members, but required of all administrators. If you are wanting to have some of your staff members trained, then I suggest you purchase your materials now since the price will be going up soon.
