Before the Civil War, America had embraced the technological innovations and organizational changes that accompanied industrialization.  After the Civil War, the forces of industrialization transformed the nature of farming, stimulated urban growth, and attracted many more immigrants to the United States than ever before.  As a result, the nation changed dramatically, and the new economic order reverberated through the halls of state and national governments and altered private lives as well.
