The leader of cuba today is Raúl Castro.
He is president of the Council of State of Cuba and therefore makes him president of Cuba, replacing his brother's presidency from February 24 of 2008. Raúl Castro is a military and political Cuban. He holds the military rank of Army General .

Not being able to hold onto Cuba no longer, as Spain had lost the Philippines and Puerto from being invaded by the United States, Spain had called for a peace treaty on July 17th of 1898.

So on August 12th, the United States and Spain finally signed a protocol of Peace, which Spain agreed to give up all rights over Cuba.

On December 10, 1898, the United States and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris, which realized Cuban independence.

Although the Cubans had interacted in the liberation efforts, the United States stopped Cuba from participating in the Paris peace talks and signing the treaty. The treaty officially gave Cuba it's independence, but U.S. General William R. Shafter refused to allow Cuban General Calixto Garcíaand his rebel forces to participate in the surrender in Santiago de Cuba.

So alot of Spanish historians argue that Cuba couldn't have succeeded on its own. Cuban historians argue the Cubans were on the verge of winning in 1898 and needed no outside help.
