YOUR OPINION........

You have listened to 4 presentations all outlining important key points for your consideration.

You now need to think about what you have heard and make you own decision!!

You have now been asked to decide whether the WHO will support or oppose golden rice. Use your time to decide what additional facts you need to make a good decision and what moral questions need to be answered. You have heard a testimony from each interested group, you should consider all their ideas when making your final decision.

Recap about each groups ideas:

1. Friends of the Earth: Represent an organisation dedicated to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. They think that golden rice, and all genetically modified plants and animals, pose unknown threats to the environment and human health. They consider the development of genetically modified organisms only continues because of the power wielded by large agribusiness companies.

2. Philippine Partnership for Development Farmer-Research Scientists (MASIPAG)
MASIPAG was formed in 1986 as a collaboration between farmers and agricultural researchers to improve rice farming practices. The organization hopes to make rice farmers independent of loans and chemicals through training in sustainable agriculture. They have argued that poor Asian farmers are not likely to benefit from golden rice. Instead, they see golden rice as a chance for the biotechnology industry to improve its image.

3. People from developing nations: They represent the desperately poor and may have children exhibiting symptoms of vitamin A deficiency. No solution to this critical health problem is immediately available, they have argued that golden rice is desperately needed because the effects of malnutrition are so severe.

4. International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Scientists: IRRI is an organisation that does research in plant breeding and development of new rice varieties for farmers in Asia. Products of IRRI development are freely distributed to farmers and local plant breeders. They have argued that distributing golden rice will benefit malnourished children.

Now you have considered all the information, its time to decide what you believe.

I don't believe in golden rice because it's expensive, and it may have a lot of vitamin A, but you would have to eat a lot of rice to get the amount you need a day. Also having a mixed diet is more nutritional, because if you just have vitamin A, you may have vitamin B deficiencies, because of the lack of other nutrients. Having a mix of fruits and vegetables is more nutritious, healthy, cheap and easy to produce. In the end, having foods like sweet potato (yesssssssss) and lettuce, could prove to be more effective as a whole for people who suffer from vitamin deficiencies. Obviously, eating vegetables can feed and care for people with all kind of nutrient related diseases all at once, instead of focusing on one vita,in

I am against golden rice because when you wiegh the pros and the cons, there is more negative to positive factors. Golden rice is not only affecting our immunity to medicines but is also affecting the pollination of other plants. These GMO crops cross contaminate organic crops causing super weeds to grow. These weeds are much more harder to get rid of, since we don't know they're true power.

In my opinion I am against golden rice. The reason Why I am against golden rice is because it can badly effect the environment, it poses unknown threats to animals and the human health. The price of golden rice when it is manufacturing is estonishly exspensive but after the golden rice is manufactured it is cheap as normal rice, even though golden rice contains for vitamins A then strawberrys but the price can establish the differed. In my opinion we should use golden rice as our last resort to the people that are in poverty and desperately need vitamin A.

I am against golden rice because I believe that it is socially, economically, ethically, emotionally, scientifically and environmentally wrong. From what I have researched and learnt today, I think that the negative impacts of golden rice, by far, outweigh the positive impacts. Golden rice is not the solution to world vitamin A deficiency because it can be an allergy or medical threat as it has not been highly tested, it encourages a diet of only golden rice and it does not supply an adequate amount of vitamin A. Whereas, nutrient-rich foods can replace golden rice and provide the vitamins needed.

Elsa: I think we should use something tried tested and true instead of using something we've only learnt about for some century's. 😊
