Characterization: Beatty

captain of firehouse

captain Beatty is indirectly characterized as intelligent in the story "Fahrenheit 451." one example of this is he quotes sayings from books he has read before all the time. one quote that was said was "Speed up the film, Montag, quick... Uh! Bang! Smack! Wallop, Bing, Bong, Boom! Digest-digests, digest-digest-digests. Politics? One column, two sentences, a headline!... Whirl man's mind around about so fast under the pumping hands of publishers, exploiters, broadcasters that the centrifuge flings off all unnecessary, time-wasting thought!". He makes smart quotes like this throughout the story and always says them to montag. this is just one example why Captain beatty is indirectly characterized as intelligent.

Directly: Caring

Captain Beatty can be characterized as caring. At one point in his life he cared about books and now he has to burn them. He quotes books and says them to people all the time. Before books were banned he used to read them a lot. He is also caring because when montag saw the lady burn herself he did not go to work and beatty came to check on him. Beatty also let him have a few days off of work to let him rest. these are just a few reasons why Captain beatty is directly characterized as caring.
