Summer Olympics from 1896 to 2010

How has the number of people in the Summer Olympics changed from 1896 to 2010?

- The Olympics have increased from a 42-event competition with fewer than 250 male athletes from 14 nations to a 300-event sporting celebration with over 10,000 competitors from 205 nations.

- Organizers for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing expected approximately 10,500 athletes to take part in the 302 events on the program for the games.

My Reaction:

I was very surprised at how much of an increase there was. 3,900% is huge, it has been over 100 years, but I still think that its a huge increase. Considering that there was 250 male athletes to start in 1986, and now in 100 years there are some where around 10,000 male and female athletes total in the Olympics. The main reason that I think there was so much of a change is because the population has grown by a humungous amount, and there are more and more athletic and amazing people that participate in sports and activities. So more people are pushing to get better, at their sport to hopefully become a professional athlete. So that's why I think there are so much more Olympians these days and there is such a huge percentage increase.
