AIDS is a deadly disease that weakens the immune system and decreases the resistance of fighting infection and malignancy.
WHEN WAS IT FIRST DISCOVERED?
The virus that causes AIDS was first discovered in 1980's. This awful epidemic was specifically attacking the gay community. Many people were affected by this disease and many died.
THE AFFECT ON THE GAY COMMUNITY:
During the AIDS epidemic it had the most impact on the gay community. One person who really spread the word about it and showed how he felt about the epidemic was Thom Gunn, an award winning poet. In his poem, "The Man with Night Sweats", he describes what it was like for someone who has the disease.
"The Man with Night Sweats"
In this poem he's describing what the man with this disease is going through during the night. As you can tell from the poem it's not a very pleasant thing to go through. In this line "I grew as I explored the body i could trust even while i adored the risk that made robust", it talk about how the man "explored" with another that he trusted and that were robust. One line that I find interesting is "...hugging my body to me as if to shield it from the pains that will go through me" because you can imagine someone holding them self trying to defend themselves from something.
