Global Warming

The article starts off about talking about how global warming is causing more and more extreme storms across the world. These storms are causing fresh water to flow into the oceans. Researchers from the University of California, say that the year 2006 had 18 percent more fresh water flowing into the oceans and melting ice caps than in the year 1994. The article said it was a 1.5 percent increase each year, that does not seem like much, but over time it adds up and becomes dangerously significant. The article then goes on and talks about how there is more water in the world now, but the water is not always spread around the world to where it is needed most and instead it might be spreading to the places that it is not that necessary. With the greenhouse gases the water is evaporating quicker creating terrifying storms that have a more punishing affect on the land it passes over. This cycle with repeat its self as the rainfall from the storms flows back into the rivers.

I think article should start to worry people with the rapid freshwater increase and the more ferocious storms. The melting ice from global warming does have it advantages though. First, more fresh water is good for the people since we are not able to drink the ocean’s salt water. This gives us a higher water supply and slows the risk of using up and the fresh water for future generations to come. Another pro to this article is the fact that the water cycle keeps repeating. This means that the rivers and lakes around the area of the storms will not ruin out. Once the water flows into the ocean from the rivers, the water will come right back because of the rainfall from the storms. These are all important benefits, but there are always cons to the pros. One con is that the glaciers are melting at an uncontrollable rate. With the ice melting that quickly soon enough there will be no more ice that can melt. All the ice disappearing will cause many issues to occur with animals, humans, and the over all planet. Lastly, another con is the storms that occur from this part of global warming. These storms can ruin land that people use for resources or living. This could cause people to move or be kicked from there torn apart homes from the storms. After all that, I did not really enjoy this article because I feel like it did not go into depth with the facts and only stated them. I would have liked an article that went into the facts more and did not just inform the read, but explain the facts to the reader.

Bumblebees out of Canada

Bumblebees getting kicked out of Canada? As of August 2012, the bumblebees in Canada have become endangered. Researchers so not clearly know what as happened that the bumblebees have turned from the neighbor to Waldo. A Rusty-patched bumblebee that was common in Ontario and Quebec is now the first bee in North America to be considered endangered. This bumblebee is called the rusty-patch because of the distinct orange on its abdomen. Researchers believe that this bumblebee is the victim of habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change, but there is no one solid reason why they are going endangered in Canada. The situation of the disappearing bumblebee was actually unseen until a student at York University noticed it. Bees are a very important source to the human food supply. People don’t actually eat the bumblebee, but through pollinating crops they help the food grow. Just like the how melting ice caps is a signal to global warming, the disappearance to bees is a signal that something we are doing is changing the environment.

This article to me is very important. It makes me realize I do not play close enough attention to the environment and that I need to start. It is an incredible article to make people remember to notice the little things and that bees are a huge part of keeping us alive. Instead of being afraid of bees, we should show respect to the bumblebee. Even though the bumblebee becoming endangered sounds terrible, there are still pros. First, this is good because like I said, this article makes people think of noticing the little things. People should really start to notice the changes happening around them or they will notice it before it is too late. At least now researches can try to change why the bumblebees are disappearing, before they become extinct in Canada. Another benefit from this it that people realize how important bees are in our society. Many people do not realize the bumblebees help our food source; so next time people will not smack the bee to kill it, but instead capture it and let it free. This article helps people realize the importance that bumbles have on us and that we should protect them as time goes on from here. The cons of this article are just like the pros, but not in the positive insight. One con is that the bees are becoming endangered and they produce one-third of our food source. If there bees are becoming endangered, their numbers are declining and that makes the effect will be less pollination. This means that our food supply will decrease causing it harder to farm and produce food for ourselves. Another disadvantage is that it can keep happening and not just in Canada, but all over North America. It could keep spreading with the climate change and since we do not know the actual cause there is not we can do to stop it. The con is that we do not know the reason why the bumblebees are dying off and until we so it can happen to all the bumblebees. In this cause with the endangered bumblebees, the cons definitely over weigh the pros.

Experience

For my experience I chose to walk through the nearby forest preserve for three thirty-minute intervals. It was actually a very peaceful time and I would highly recommend doing it for everyone. Well on this walk with nature surrounding you at all times, I was able to observe a lot. The main thing I observed on the walk was all the noise. I would hear crickets, snakes, and bunch of creature’s noises that I could not distinguish. The noise never stopped from when I got in to when I got out. Personally, I thought I was very nice to hear all the noises. It was very relaxing and put me in a state of mind out side of school, stress, sports, and anything I would normally think about. It put me in my own little bubble where I would just think about the important things to me and I felt like I was apart of nature. The next thing I observed was the trees and the changing of the colors. The leaves have not fully changed yet because it is not yet fall, but they were still changing. Reflecting on the changing leaves sadly made me think about death, but not in the depressing way. Looking at the leaves made me feel that people are going to leave in your life and fall away, but once spring comes you found someone to fill that hole and they replace it with joy and happiness. At on point, everything just came together as one big picture and nature really hit me. It was like everything in nature came together for the first time and I saw the true beauty in itself. From everything I observed to everything little thing I did not notice, it just all came together for a picture I will never forget.

This also relates to our course with Phenology. As I was walking I was about to how that all the leaves are changing from tree to tree. I saw that some trees still have all their leaves, but some trees do not have any leaves.

Great reflections Joey!!! There are a couple of typos and it would have been nice to have the dates of your nature walks. Otherwise- it looks great! 50/50 :)
