Mathilde's character is foolish and greedy because she doesn't appreciate what she has. She is jealous and dishonest because she did not visit her friend because her friend was rich and when she lost her friend's necklace, she wasn't brave enough to tell the truth. Mathilde is "blinded" because she spends time sad about what she doesn't have instead of happy of what she has.
