Installing your Toilet without a Plumber

For people who are brave enough, you can pretty much do anything around the home that you may want to. Some are even brave enough to do their own plumbing. The question remains if you could actually install your own toilet. If you are a dedicated do-it-yourselfer, you can certainly try installing a toilet by yourself. It can be a fairly straightforward and a money-saving job if you are tight on cash while renovating your home. Experts in the field say that the first thing you need to know is the "rough in" measurement of the toilet that is being replaced. In most cases the waste pipe is centered about a foot from the wall, although it can also be either ten inches or fourteen inches depending. You will want to check the rough-in and measure from the wall to the hold-down bolts on the toilet. Before you do anything, you want to turn off the water supply to the toilet that you are removing. Once that is done, flush it a few times to empty out its water reservoir, you do not want water getting all over the place when you install the new one.

You can then loosen the nuts that hold the toilet to the floor. You shouldn't be surprised if they won't budge; years of corrosion can sealed them into place on the flour. If that happens, use a hack saw blade to cut away the old bolts and lift the old toilet out and away. Now you can prepare to install the new one. Set the new toilet onto the base where the old toilet used to be. When you do this, you will want a solid flange in order to assure that you will not have a leaky toilet. The flange is the only thing that is anchoring the toilet to the floor. If it's loose or damaged the toilet will rock.

Make sure to scrape off the old wax ring and inspect the flange. Once the toilet is in place, squash the wax ring until the unit is settled on the floor. Don't use too much force. Instead, sit on the toilet backward and wiggle around to settle it. Bolt it down. You will also want to use a flexible water supply line. This job will take a bit of time and some heavy lifting, but if you are determined to do it all on your own, you will prevail with some good old fashion stubbornness.

Fixing a Leaky Faucet - Not Plumber Needed

Having a leaky faucet in your house can be quite annoying. Not only is it annoying, but it is a waste of water due to the fact that the water is not going anywhere useful, and it makes for a very messy little problem. Depending on where the leak is, you could also run the risk of it causing water damage in your home too. But fixing a leaky faucet is actually quite simple and inexpensive for you to do on your own.

Some of the things that you will need are; an adjustable wrench, a Philips or flathead screwdriver, some penetrating oil, and some replacement washers and O-rings. Before you go about starting the repair job, you want be sure that you turn off the water supply to your kitchen. It usually isn't necessary to turn off the main water supply to a house. In most new sink models, there are handles underneath the sink that can control the water coming in from the main line. There is usually one for hot and one for cold. You should turn them both off.

After this is done, you will want to remove any decorative parts of the faucet's knobs. Most will usually come right off with a screwdriver. Do this gently, so you do not ruin them, you will have to replace them when you are done. Underneath the knobs, you'll find a screw that mounts the handle to the stem. Unscrew this screw and gently remove the handle with the screwdriver. If you have a hard time getting this off, use a few drops of penetrating oil, this will help to loosen the screw a little bit.

After you have this job complete, you will want to loosen the packing nut. After you remove the nut, you should be able to see the stem. You need to remove that as well. Look at the O-ring and the washer inside the valve seat to see if this could actually be the reason for the leak you have. Replace them both with an exact fit. Getting a new O-ring and/or washer will just save you another leak later on. When all of this is done, reassemble all of the parts in reverse order from which you took it all apart. Turn the water source back on, and the leak should be gone. If it is not, you may want to call in a professional to take a look at the faucet. You could have something else wrong. But, a plumber will know exactly what it is and fix it right away.
