Mission to the Moon

Project Mercury

The names of the men that led the mission are Alan Shepard,Gus Grissom,Gordon Cooper,Wally Schirra and Deke Slayton. Project Mercury took place in 1958 and completed in 1963. The objectives were to successfully orbit a manned spacecraft around earth, investigate humankinds' ability to function in space and to recover both occupant and spacecraft. All the astronauts were military test pilots. Project Mercury was sucessful.

Project Gemini

Project Gemini was named after the crew members that led the mission. The mission took place 1965 and ended in 1966. The challenges in Project Gemini were gain astronaut experience with long duration space flights, methods of reentry and landing the spacecraft and study the effects of weightlessness on astronauts during long flights. Gemini missions involved the first American extravehicular activity and new orbital maneuvers including rendezvous and docking. Project Mercury was successful.

Apollo 11

The men who led Apollo 11 were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. Apollo 11 began in 1969 and ended in 1969.Apollo 11 was the first space flight to land on the moon. The mission duration was 8 days 3 hours and 18 minutes. Apollo 11 was a sucess.
