In this presentation I will be explaining the early aztec lifestyle.
- The Aztecs followed a strict social hierarchy in which individuals were identified as nobles , commoners, serfs, or slaves. The noble class consisted of government and military leaders, high level priests, and lords. The Aztecs also wore loose fitting clothes and it didn’t cover their bodies completely. Aztec clothes was generally made of cotton or ayate fiber, made from the Maguey Cactus. Ancient Aztec religion was a complex interaction of gods, dates, directions and colours. It seems that most of the preoccupation in the religion had to do with fear of the nature, and a fear of the end of the world.
- The aztecs lived in the aztec empire in the city of Tenochtitlan, which would now be modern day Mexico. These city-states ruled the area in and around the Valley of Mexico from 1428 until they were defeated by the combined forces of the Spanish conquistadors and their native allies under Hernancortes in 1521.
The Aztecs had a wide variety of food that is still used today in modern day Mexico. Their most popular crop was Maize or Corn in english. Maize has been domesticated for thousands of years and has been exported all over the world from Mexico. Mexico is still to this day one of the biggest Maize exporters. Food that was also included in aztec diet was beans and squash. They also ate chillies, tomatoes, limes, cashews, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and peanuts. But one of the greatest food that the aztecs had to offer was chocolate. The cocoa bean was highly treasured in the Aztec Empire. In fact, the bean was used as a currency, as well as Aztec food.
- Each ancient Aztec weapon was unique, used for a specific purpose. Perhaps the best known ancient Aztec weapon is the maquahuitl. This is sometimes compared to the sword, and it was a powerful, close contact weapon. The maquahuitl could be used as a club, but other types of clubs were used. Another common ancient Aztec weapon was the spear. They were extremely sharp, and sometimes over 7 feet long. Bows, arrows, and slings were also used in combat but this was more for distant combat.
- Ordinary Aztecs lived in simple huts, often of just one room. The huts were made of adobe and any furniture was very simple such as reed mats to sleep on or sit on and low tables. Wooden chests were used to store clothes. Aztec nobles lived in much grander houses with many rooms. They were usually shaped like a hollow square with a central courtyard. It often contained gardens and fountains. By law only upper class Aztecs could build a house with a second story. If ordinary Aztecs did they could be executed.
