The Battle at Antietam is also known as the Battle at Sharpsburg. They fought on Wednesday, September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with 22,717 dead, wounded and missing on both sides combined. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia about 55,000 men, entered the state of Maryland on September 3, 1862, following their victory at Second Bull Run on August 30. The commanders are Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan. McClellan failed to destroy Lee's army. Lee won this war.
