Social Media

Focus Question:What are the  negative affects of social media on peoples social skills?

Most people use social media to communicate with friends, family, and even to meet new people. However, excessive hours could be hurting social skills more than helping them.

Negative Affects

Lack of opportunities to develop face-to-face social skills can lead to many unfortunate side effects including loneliness, shyness, depression, bullying, and violence

Also if people don't get used to talking to people in real life instead of on social media their social skills will probably be really weak as they grow older.

Stanley Greenspan said that “as children become more alienated from the lives of others we can expect to see increasing levels of violence and extremism and less collaboration and empathy.”

Relationships and Isolation

Many people are involved in an abundant number of relationships through technology, but sometimes the quality of these associations leaves people feeling empty.

Some technological advances cause people to be distracted, overly stressed, and increasingly isolated.

"Social media is not a media. The key is to listen, engage, and build relationships." ~David Alston

Indirect Communication

Whenever you are talking to your friends on social media sometimes it can be hard to tell whether they are joking or not. Also, even though you may be kidding the person you are communicating may not know that, which could end up hurting their feelings.

You can only truly know someones mood by communicating in real life.

“Our social tools are not an improvement to modern society, they are a challenge to it.” ~Clay Shirky,

“Social media is an ingredient, not an entree.”

Connection to 'Fahrenheit 451'

In Fahrenheit 451 Montag would always talk to Mildred and she wouldn't pay attention to him because she would be to busy with her ear buds in or watching the family. This is what happens sometimes when people put their headphones in instead of talking to people in real life.
