Archimedes: The Creator of the Death Ray.

Eureka is actually an embellishment of the story when he discovered water displacement.

                      About the Author

I am a 12 year old boy who is making this site about Archimedes for a research project. I go to Holman Middle and this is for English. I hope you find it interesting and educational.

I became interested in Archimedes while reading "The Heroes of Olympus" series. He was mentioned and a few of his inventions were mentioned and I, who have had a dream of being an inventor, connected with the stories. So I have decided to right about him.

Archimedes's death ray.

                 Descriptive paragraph
                Who is Archimedes.

Archimedes was an excellent mathematician and inventor. Archimedes is actually one of the most well known ancient scientists. He was said to have run around nude when he found water displacement, this is just common embellishment.  Archimedes said “Give me a place to stand and rest my lever on, and I can move the Earth.” He said this because he saw the power of the lever and the potential it had in life. He is well known for discovering the relation between the surface area and the volume of a sphere and those of a circumscribing cylinder. He also made the Archimedes Screw.  Another invention he made was the heat ray, aka a death ray.  It was supposed to be used to burn invading Roman Ships.  An additional fun fact is that he discovered the first idea of pi.

This is a web describing Archimedes and his well known inventions.

                       Cause and effect
     The discovery of Water Displacement

This is my flow chart

Archimedes is known for discovering water displacement. All the stories I found about Archimedes discovering water displacement are legends. I have put the legends in here that I have found in multiple places.

The first legend is that Archimedes' king had a crown supposedly made of solid gold. The king suspected that it was silver plated with gold so, he tasked Archimedes with proving or disproving his theory. Archimedes first took equal weights of silver and gold and submersed them in water and recorded the results. Then he submersed the crown in an equal measure of water and recorded his results. Finally he figured out that the crown was not actually solid gold and the king got a new one.

The second legend is not as interesting in my eyes but, who knows you might find it interesting. He was said to have stepped into a full bath and discovered that the water rose. From that he realized that the submerged part of his bodies volume was the same as the volume the tub water rose.

                           Chronological
          Archimedes: Birth to Death

Archimedes was born in 287 B.C. in Syracuse, Sicily. He lived there most of his life and it was there he discovered water displacement. Archimedes discovered Archimedes theory a.k.a water displacement in 270 B.C. In 269 B.C. Archimedes made a discovery with pi . Archimedes screw was made in 250 B.C. Archimedes heat ray was used 214 through 212 B.C.  He later was killed there by an Roman soldier for not listening to leave and give the Roman soldier his research. It was said he made two spheres, one a star globe and the other of the sun, moon, and planets, showing the process mechanically.

This is a picture of Archimedes sphere and cylinder theory.
This is the timeline depicting the times of inventions.

I like the idea of a heat ray it seems like a fun toy to have. However did it actually burn ships or was it just a theory

His heat ray actual burn ships but, unlike a laser gun from star wars it took a long time to heat up if the sun wasn't really hard that day and even then it still took a while.

How did he go about presenting his theories? Was he criticized in his time?
