The Pagan Kingdom

The Pagan's first great king was Anawrahta who ruled from 1044-1077. He began to conquer the surrounding areas. His conquests provided Pagan with access to trading ports and the kingdom prospered. Him and his successors supported Theravada Buddhism, they built thousands of temples and became the center of Buddhist learning.

The Khmer Empire

The Khmer Empire rose in what today is Cambodia. This empire reached its height sometime near 850 and 1220. They reflected on a strong Indian Influence and adopted both Hindu and Buddhist religions. In Angkor, the capital, rulers had spectacular temples, the most famous would be Angkor Wat.


Most of Southeast China was influenced by India, Vietnam was strongly influenced by China. Vietnam adopted the Chinese language and Chinese clothing and hair styles. Confucianism and Daoism were adopted by the Vietnamese as well as many features of the Chinese government. Two sisters named Trung Trac and Trung Nhi supposedly raised an army and drove the Chinese from Vietnam.
