Agents of Socialization
My family played a big role in the helping me build social skills. First, every since I was in fourth grade, my dad would take me on student mission trips with my church. This taught me how to value the things I have. Second, my uncle and my grandma taught me how to fish. Fishing helped me learn how to be more patient. Spending a lot of time with my grandparents growing up allowed me to build good relationships. When I was younger, my parents watched Barney with me and took me to a Barney concert. Barney taught me basic life lessons.
Peers helped me develop social skills. My AKD friends helped me learn how to make close relationships with people from school groups. This allowed me to not be afraid to talk to others in other groups. My friends helped me to be more outgoing and not be afraid to be myself. This let me know that it was okay to wear a penguin onezie. My bass drum squad taught me how to work as one. When we play, all of the notes have to connect. Using team work, we were able to make it all connect. This prepared us for performances like the Pops Concert.
School has taught me how to manage the things in my life. Band has taught me self confidence. The self confidence allowed me to not be afraid to try new things and don't worry about how it goes. School has also taught me time management. With different classes, I had to learn how to manage my time so I can do all the things I need to do. Middle school basketball allowed me to understand how to balance two things at once. It also taught me to figure out how to make room for the important things like school work. We also watched videos in school like School House Rock that taught me grammar.
Mass media was a huge influence in my socialization. When I was little, I would watch sesame street. The show helped me learn how to count and my letters. When I was in middle school, I would read J-14 magazine. This influenced the way I dressed and the things i was interested in. The movie Cadet Kelly taught me to not be afraid to be myself. Also, it taught me to preserver and keep trying until you get it right. The show Lizzie McGuire showed me that everything is going to be fine as long as you have your friends with you.
