How do lifestyle choices affect your body?
Your choices in life will affect your health for as long as you live, so it is important to choose wisely what you do, and put into your body. "Smoking causes 84% of deaths from lung cancer and 83% of deaths from chronic obstructive lung disease, including bronchitis" (Source 1). Smoking, junk food, lack of exercise, and poor quality of air can severely damage your body.
Smoking increases your chances of getting diseases. "In fact, smoking increases your risk of having a stroke by at least 50%, which can cause brain damage and death" (Source 1). This means that one out of every two smokers will get a stroke in their life and possibly brain damage. Therefore smoking damages your body by attacking your brain and nervous system.
Junk food causes you to gain weight. "...calorie intake from sweetened beverages has increased by 74 calories per day from 1962 to 2000, contributing to positive energy balance and weight gain" (Source 2). This means that we have started to eat a lot more junk food in America which has caused us to become obese and fat. Therefore, junk food damages your body by attacking your cells.
Lack of exercise can hurt your heart. "... 22 percent of heart disease is caused by physical inactivity" (Source 3). This means that you could lower your risk of heart disease by 1/5 if you simply exercised for 30 minutes a day. Therefore, lack of exercise damages your body by attacking your heart.
Poor quality of air can cause breathing issues. "PM2.5 [a particle matter in the air] can increase the number of asthma attacks, and make them more severe. Over 1.2 million Canadians suffer from this condition, and asthma is the most common cause of medical emergencies in children" (Source 4). This means that many people - including children - are being hurt by the pollution in the air. Therefore, poor quality of air damages your body by attacking your lungs.
In conclusion, many different things can affect your body. You just need to be smart and decide whether something you eat or do is healthy. Therefore, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise, and poor quality of air can severely damage your body.
