GoPro Tips

If you want good audio results from your GoPro, remove it from the case and use an external microphone. Trying to record audio when the microphone is completely sealed in the housing doesn’t work very well. Using “the frame mount” will allow you to mount your camera on a tripod, while still giving you access to the needed ports. On the Hero 3, you’ll need a USB to microphone adapter – which cost 20 dollars… For Hero 2 owners, you have a dedicated audio port which allows you to plug in any 3.5mm microphone.

The overwhelming senses is that any cheap external microphone is a welcomed improvement over the standard internal microphone.

Here’s an audio comparison test showing just that:

Start exploring the different field of view modes. The Hero 3 has (3) different options – Ultra Wide, Medium and Narrow. The Medium and Narrow FOV settings are great when filming subjects that are not action related, like interviews type situtions or what not. Long story short, the field of views modes available on GoPro’s are incredible powerful and often go unused… So use them!

GoPro doesn’t do a great job of explaining what resolutions are best used for what. It seems a lot of users just stick to 1080P because it’s well known and associated with HD and quality. The truth is, the other resolutions have their place. If you’re interested in learning more about them, check out this post on Understanding Your GoPro Settings.
