Author: Joe Gibbs
Book report by: Austin Stuhr
Did you ever think that one of the best things that could happen to you could come from an unanswered prayer? Joe Gibbs was one of those people. He wanted to play professional football but wasn't good enough, however he became a very successful NFL coach. The book Chalk Talks by Joe Gibbs, is a Bible based devotional to coach you and give you a game plan for life.
Joe Gibbs played college football at SDSU. He began his coaching career under Don Coryell as a graduate assistant. It was in those early years of coaching that he made God his head coach and the Bible his winning game plan. With his game plan, he won three super bowls in 16 seasons as the head coach of the Washington Redskins with an overall record of 140-65.
Joe Gibbs had other interests. In 1991, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) was formed. As owner, Joe Gibbs won three NASCAR Cup Championships and three NASCAR Nationwide Series Owners Championships.
Did I realize reoccurring symbols?
Yes, the one symbol that Joe used throughout his book is God. He tells us that God has given us a perfect game plan that increases our chance to win and that we should not let anything come between us and God. In life, players need fans, writers need readers, leaders need followers and we all need the most important audience, the audience of one.
What was the author's purpose for writing this book?
I think his purpose was to tell us his life story and how he succeeded in life. Joe believed that success in sports is not about the X's and O's or the technology and parts in racing. It's about the dedication and talent that individuals put in their teams.
Interesting facts about the author?
That a football coach would be so interested in NASCAR Racing that he would want to own his own car and be very successful in two very competitive professional sports.
Would I recommend this book?
I would recommend this book for fathers and sons. It was a good book but it was like most other non fiction devotionals I have read before.
