Magazine Industry

Magazines have been around for a long time. People are used to having the entertainment that comes with them. The magazine with the highest circulation used to be TV Guide.

However, we see no need for this magazine anymore. The highest circulating magazine today is Modern Maturity. Here is why:

* Reaches people over 55 years old.

*And it is FREE.

Magazine History

There were not many magazines circulating in 1825, with less than 100 in circulation. The reasons for that are:

* Literacy rates are very low

* It was very hard to distribute these magazines.

However, with new railroads and better infrastructure, by 1850 the number of magazines in circulation was six times higher. People also started to read more, contributing to the increase of magazine circulation.

SATURDAY EVENING POST:

The first successful magazine in the US, tried to reach a wide range of demographic market by having stories of general interest, popular fiction stories, business and serial stories, which means you have to buy more than one edition to know the end of that story!

READERS DIGEST: Was the last magazine to have general interest stories. After that, magazines started to focus on specific target markets and have several different ones to each market. It is still in place and printed in 160 countries.

LIFE MAGAZINE:

This magazine started to establish photojournalism, which means the use of photos to tell stories.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC:

Has ads in the first and last ten pages. Has a specific structure with yellow square around it, and narrow and tall. It is printed in very high quality paper because of its photographs.

TERMS TO KNOW

SPLIT RUN EDITIONS:

Term used when magazines do not give every subscriber the same edition. Someone in St. Louis might receive a different one than New York, so the ads can be target to that specific area. Besides, they can target different demographic groups with high end advertisement based on the income. Magazine is a very narrowcast medium.

EXAMPLES OF NARROWCAST MAGAZINES:

This is the reason why they will continue to survive, because they are able to sell very specific ads to specific audiences. Where else would you want to place your "buy chess sets here!" ads if not in a chess magazine?

Who can charge the most?

The answer is WOMEN'S MAGAZINE! Women make house purchases, so they are most likely to generate revenue for house products, which represent a big portion of what households spend every month.

Other terms:

Magalogue: Mix of magazine and catalog.

Brand magazine: When a brand comes up with their own magazine.

Advertorials: Look like articles, but are ads.

ADS CAN CHANGE THE WAY A MAGAZINE IS WRITTEN!

How?

Profit is the main goal of almost all magazines. If they have a sponsor whose product might be compromised because of a certain news, they might omit it. An example: If a hair shampoo company is sponsoring National Geographic, they might consider omitting news such as "Amazon rain forest about to end due to beauty products, such as shampoos...".

HOW MAGAZINES IMPACT SOCIETY?

Some magazines, such as Seventeen, will lay out to teenagers how to be the best you can be. And by doing so, you need to have a perfect skin, great body, shiny hair, wear X and Y clothes and wear make up, among others.

The portray of being a "good woman" as reaching out to be as close as possible to the definition of beauty so you can please man.

Definition of beauty that, for most of the time, is unachievable.

BE MINDFUL!
