Mexico: A Look at it's Social Issues

A class project in Mr. Smith's English 10 at Cardinal Newman HS

Project Overview

Project Proposal

Name: Cody Baker

Period: 1st

Nation of your choice: Mexico

Rationale (or explanation why you are curious about this country): I picked Mexico because it is a beautiful country in some areas and not so much in others and I want to learn how life is different in areas in Mexico.

Summary (of what you already know about the history, geography, culture, and social issues): I know that there are problems with kidnapping and smuggling drugs by the drug cartel which are huge deals. I know some places are beautiful and some are worn down.

Prediction (about what you think you will discover or hope to discover during your research): I hope I learn more about the drug cartel and the beautiful places in Mexico. I have never been to Mexico but my parents have and they said it was a beautiful place depending where you go. After this project I would hope to go to Mexico and experience it in real life.

Discussion (of the importance of this nation in the global community, i.e., the “so what”): They are important to us because they are our neighbors and there immigrants come over to our country. They're like our brother or sister.

New York Times Topics: Mexico

#1 They Say, I Say

Title of article (in quotation marks): "Capture of a Drug Lord Is a Small Win in Mexico"

Title of newspaper (underlined or italicized): The New York Times

Essay Author: Elisabeth Malkin

Essay main idea/thesis statement: Stopping drug cartel

Quote: I think Hope is mistaken because he overlooks the idea that "capturing kingpins has become less and less important"

Comment: writing the publication of "Capture of a Drug Lord Is a Small Win in Mexico", Alejandro Hope explains that it is getting less and less important because we get to see the underworld from large cartels to smaller gangs in our local areas.

Quote: Mr. Serrano believes that  "what we have met is just a bump in the road"

Comment: I don't think this is a bump in the road. This is a huge problem and we have been trying to stop it for awhile now. In the state of California there are more Mexicans then Americans.

1. AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE (Focus on who. Who wrote the text? Who was it written for? Why did the writer write it?) The author is Kirk Semple, he writes for The New York Times. I think the text was written for anybody that follows immigration. Kirk wrote this because immigration is a huge deal in America. It could be one of the biggest problems in the US.

2. CONTENT AND THEME (Focus on the what. What is the text about? What is the author’s message?) The text is about Obamas law on immigration. I think the message from the author is to show that people want immigration to stop. In California its to the point where there are more Mexicans then Americans.

3. TONE AND MOOD (Focus on the how. What is the writer’s tone? How does the text make the reader feel? What kind of diction is used to create a certain tone/mood?) I think the writers tone is a monotone and he seems pretty serious about the situation.

4. STYLISTIC DEVICES (What stylistic devices does the writer use? To what effect? Common devices: irony, sarcasm, rhetorical questions, figurative speech, analogy, metaphor, etc.) The author seems to write this essay not as a comment to something but to get a message across

5. STRUCTURE (What kind of text is it? What structural conventions are used?)

3. TONE AND MOOD (Focus on the how. What is the writer’s tone? How does the text make the reader feel? What kind of diction is used to create a certain tone/mood?) The Author sets the mood because he writes the article so seriously. The text makes the reader think about how serious the situation is. They are overpopulating states.

I like how you have great information on the country you did. I'll bet that New York can be a dangerous place because of the kidnapping and drugs as you said. If to many people are getting kidnap then some people might be leaving New York to find a better place to live in peace. 😄
