Determining the Market Value of a Dental Practice

A variety of situations exist in which the owner of a dental practice needs to determine the value of the business. Whether they are selling their practice or taking out a loan against it, owners have a number of ways to approach the valuation. The most common include the following:

1. Asset valuation, which considers physical assets, along with intangible ones like the clinic's reputation.

2. Market comparison, which determines value based on the sale of similar businesses in the area.

3. Capitalization of earnings, which examines income potential and market risk to determine a fair market value.

Determining the value of a dental practice is a complex task. For this reason, it is generally advisable to consult with an experienced appraiser who has dealt with such businesses before. Such an expert understands unique industry considerations such as the patient base, earnings potential, and other parameters related to that specific market and is therefore more likely to determine the true fair market value of the practice in question.

Benevis Offers Continuing Education Opportunities to Dentists

The American Dental Association (ADA) offers a service that certifies providers of continuing education for professional dentists. Known as the ADA Continuing Education Recognized Provider (ADA CERP) certification, the program aims to help dentists locate courses that will keep them informed of the latest clinical advancements, legal issues, and national and local regulatory requirements.

One of the newest recipients of the ADA CERP certification is Benevis Practice Services, which provides a variety of human resources, accounting, and other non-clinical business support services to dental offices all over the country. As an ADA-certified Recognized Provider, Benevis is now one of the few dental practice support services companies in America to offer industry-standard continuing education classes to its client doctors.

With the ADA CERP certification in hand, Benevis is now turning its attention to working with state dental associations. Through this collaboration, the company aims to assemble a schedule of high-quality continuing education courses and make it available to dental practitioners throughout the states in which Benevis operates.

Boomerang Receives National Certification

Benevis Practice Services’ Boomerang, an electronic health records (EHR) system, has earned certification from the Drummond Group’s Electronic Health Records Office of the National Coordinator Authorized Certification Body (ONC-ACB). The award-winning system now complies with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ EHR Modular (Ambulatory) standards.

The system allows Benevis affiliates to share and maintain dental records to improve outcomes for their patients. It also provides capabilities for dental-record auditing and makes sure practices remain compliant and secure. The flexibility of the system means that patients can visit any practice affiliated with Benevis and have their records available, thereby delivering faster and more consistent care.

Systems like Boomerang form an important part of the U.S. government’s initiatives to improve the delivery of clinical care in the country. Boomerang’s certification signifies that it meets the 2014 standards of the ONC-ACB using a variety of modules. For more information on Boomerang, visit

Benevis Implements Talari Solution to Improve Kool Smiles Networks

A leading provider of children’s dental services, Kool Smiles focuses its efforts on underserved communities where access to quality dental care is scarce. These rural and urban communities often present unique challenges to service delivery, as dental offices in these areas must frequently navigate substandard IT network performance and frequent outages.

Benevis, which provides supportive, nonclinical business services to dental practices across the United States, has helped Kool Smiles improve its network performance at its Marietta, Georgia, headquarters and 29 other offices. Benevis recently bolstered its IT support with the implementation of a software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) solution created by Talari Networks. Deployed at all affiliated Kool Smiles locations, the solution has greatly increased efficiency for the dental office networks, lowering operational costs while creating a more reliable network for dentists and their staff.

All Kool Smiles offices currently benefiting from Benevis’ services have transitioned from multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) to the SD-WAN solution. Since the switch, Talari’s quality of service (QoS) tools have allowed network users to more accurately monitor system speed and quality. Additionally, the firm’s QoS capabilities have improved the networks’ ability to handle complex traffic, simplifying processes such as large image transfers and Citrix transactions.

In addition to faster application response times and fewer system-wide disruptions, the technology has enabled Kool Smiles to improve its network performance across the board. While only 53.1 percent of the practice’s offices met their uptime target of 99.9 percent in 2012, this number has risen to 96.2 percent since the Talari deployment. Moreover, the solution has resulted in an overall network spend reduction of 39 percent at selected Kool Smiles offices.
