Brighton Beach Memoirs was set in the middle of the great depression.

      What is The Great Depression?

The Great Depression was a time when the economy in the United States and throughout the world was extremely bad. It began with the Wall Street Crash of 1929. The prices on the Wall Street stock market fell a lot from October 24 to October 29, 1929. Many people lost their jobs. They became homeless and poor. This ended the wealth of the Roaring Twenties.

                  College in the 1930's

Columbia University, is an American private Ivy League research university located in Morning-side Heights, in Upper Manhattan, New York City. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the State of New York, the fifth oldest in the United States.The university was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain.

some differences between back then and to today, is that before students had to leave the school to take jobs and support their families, couldn't afford books and other stuffs. No transportation, all grades were in one classroom.

                       Costs in the 1930's

-An average car in the 1930s cost around $640.

-A gallon of gas in the 1930s cost around .15 cents per gallon.

-An average price of a house in the 1930s was $7145.

-Food: bananas 19 cents for 4 lbs., Loaf of bread 5 cents, Potatoes 18 cents for 10 lbs and Steak 22 cents per pound.

-Clothing: Shirt $2.50, Jeans $20.00 , Coats $16.00, Socks .10 cents and Underwear .50 cents

                      Stan's Apology Letter

Dear Mr. Stroheim:

I'm only want to say you I'm really sorry about my wrong behaviors, I'll will never that kind of actions that you didn't like. Therefore, I ask you for another opportunity because I really need the job to help my family in a difficult moment.

I want you think about me, about my strengths in the job. I'm very responsible, i have a good education, an the most important a good worker that always can help and you can trust.

So i just want that you think before do something. If you don't accept me, I respect your idea.
