The Human Connection
"Look Up" By: Gary Turk
This webpage, as well as "The Veldt", and "Look Up", are trying to warn people about the effects of technology, specifically on children. This webpage contains a petition to ban all handheld devices to children under the age of 12, as well as reasons for the petition, such as "obesity", and "sleep deprivation". Cris Rowan, the author of this article, as well as Ray Bradbury, and Gary Turk, try to show that too much technology can be harmful to a person.
Fahrenheit 451,"The Veldt", "Look Up", and the online petition, all show that too much technology can negatively effect people and their society. In Fahrenheit 451, negative effects of technology are shown when mildred believes that the people on T.V. are her family "Will you turn the parlour off?' he asked, 'That's my family". Negative effects can also be seen later in the book when Montag has a hard time memorizing the bible because of how used to technology he is "The numbness will go away, he thought, It'll take time, but I'll do it, or Faber will do it for me". "The Veldt" shows the negative effects of technology when the kids didn't care about the death of their parents, and they continued to play in the veldt. The poem "Look Up" turk talks about all the friends he has online, but he feels lonely because those friends are only on his computer. And finally the petition to ban all handheld devices to children under the age of 12, as well as reasons for the petition, such as "Delayed Development", and "Aggression", show the negative effects of technology.
