Foil: comparison of two opposite characters in literature


Okonkwo is a very strong and angry person. He is the only person in their that has ever beat the Cat in a wrestling match. Okonkwo is also a very angry person. He has a short temper causing him to beat his wives and children for non-important reasons. "I will not have a son who cannot hold up his head in the gathering of the clan. I would sooner strangle him with my own hands. And if you stand staring at me like that, Amadiora will break your head for you!"


Unoka is a lazy drunk that has no pride in his work and owes money to many people. He loves parties and sits around playing his flute instead of working to pay off his debts. Unoka always borrows money from people promising to pay them back but never does. His son Okonkwo is ashamed of him and many people want nothing to do with him. "Look at that wall, look at those lines of chalk. Each group there represents a debt to someone, and each stroke is one hundred cowries. You see, I owe that man a thousand cowries. But he has not come to wake me up in the morning for it. I shall pay you, but not today."
