"The Outsiders/Hero's Journey Essay"
"The Outsiders", written by S.E Hinton was a great realistic novel. At first nothing really happens, but as time went on, their was more action and more action. At the beginning of the year my writing was not that well developed, know I have improved it. My writing strenghts are, well actually I do not really know. The writing skills I want to continue developing is everything. What I liked best about reading the novel was that it was really short and it thought the reader a message.

When most people think of people that do not really fit in they think of nerds or geeks. This might be cause by all the movies about the stereotypical nerd or the stereotypical geek, that is not popular so therefore they do not fit in. However. This is not the only kind of people that do not fit in. A guy named Ponyboy Curtis does not feel part of a group so he goes on a adventure and returns with a gift called knowledge. In the realistic fiction novel “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton.
The main character Ponyboy Curtis goes on a hero's journey, because he travels through the three required phases of a mono myth. Ponyboy experiences The Separation from the Known when he and Johnny get into a fight with the socs, and one of them is drowning Pony in the water fountain in the park when Johnny says. “I killed him” (56). In The Hero’s Journey, The Separation from the Know is when the hero leaves his comfortable, and familiar world and ventures into the darkness of the unknown after the death of that socs. In The Outsiders, S.E Hinton shows us the separation from the unknown occurs when Johnny stabs Bob the soc. This was sudden because they did not plan to kill anyone . It is also traumatic in the sense of being a big shock. Imagine being in a fist fight then out of nowhere someone takes out a knife and kills someone. This result would be shocking to anyone.
Ponyboy experiences The Initiation when Johnny tells Pony that they are going to cut their hair, and that Pony is going to bleach it. Johnny and Pony were fugitives and were hiding in a church, so that the police could not catch them they decide to do that. Johnny says “Were gonna cut our hair, and you're gonna bleach yours”(71). In the Heroes Journey, the first part of The Initiation is when the hero journeys into a physical, and/or physiological unknown. In The Outsiders, when Johnny and Pony escape and cut their hair was a sudden change. The reason it was a sudden change was because they did not plan it and Pony was not okay with it. For a greaser their hair is the most important thing, and when you take something that valuable away you take away their identity.
Ponyboy continuous the experience The Initiation when he understands that fighting is only good for self defense. Pony understand It when their in the rumble with the socs in the park. Pony says, “How come you like fihts, Darry? (33). In the Hero's Journey, the second part of The Initiation is when the heroes fear must die to make way for courage, enlightenment, and independence. The hero experiences a dramatic change in the way views life and learns to become one with his new selfe.. In The Outsiders, when Pony understands that fighting is only good for self defence, he starts to change the way he thinks and acts. Ponyboy experiences The Return to Everyday Life when he returns with a gift called knowledge. A great example is when Steve Says, “Ponyboy, listen, don't get though, you're not like the rest of us and don't try to be...”(171). In the Heroes Journey, The Return to Everyday Life is when the Hero typically returns with a “gift”-leadership, enlightenment, acceptance, etc. With this struggle over, the hero can focus on “giving back” to the world. In The Outsiders, Pony understands and learns things like knowledge, he doe that by not trying to act like the rest of the guys.
In conclusion, in the realistic Fiction Novel “The Outsiders”, by S.E Hinton teaches Ponyboy many things, at the and Pony comes home and realises many things. Ponyboy experiences the Separation from the Known When him and Johnny get into a fight with the socs. Ponyboy experiences The Initiation when Johnny tells Pony that they were going to cut their hair, and that Pony was going to bleach it. Pony continues to experience The Initiation when he understands that fighting is only good for self defense. Ponyboy experiences The Return to Everyday Life when comes home not trying to find that acceptance with the greasers. It is possible someone could lose his parents, or loose some other relative. However, a heroes Journey can be taken by anyone. He or she just need to be prepared for the challenges. It will benefit for everyone he or she return with a gift.
