Matsuo Bashō

Matsuo Basho lived in the Edo Period of Japan. Through his haikus, be easily became the greatest known poet in his time. Matsuo's poetry is reknown all around the world and is now called the mastery of haiku.

Haiku is a ancient form of Japanese poetry that dates back as early as 1500. Surprisingly, haiku was practically invisible to America until it was introduced in the 1900s. It follows the simple syllable scheme of 5-7-5. Basho is, and was, the absolute master of haiku.
