Dear Journal, December 27, 1862
My name is Marry Jane Mills i' m 5 foot 5 and I live in Vancleave Mississippi. I Live with my husband Earl Mills and our Six kids. There names are Judy who is 6, Justin who is also 6, Jerry who is 5, Jessica who is 3, Jackson who is 2, and our new born Ethan and my brother Jim Smith. Jim is 15 and is heading off to war the year of 1863.
7:00 A.M.- All children are awake eating breakfast I made.
7:30- 8:00 A.M.- All children are working on chores while I clean up breakfast dishes an taking out leftovers to the wild birds on our cotton farm.
10:00- 11:30 A.M. - Is lunch I prepare sandwiches for everyone and we eat after I clean up dishes and help clean up the children.
11:30- 12:00- The children and I walk down to the market to get any kind of food or accessories we need.
12:45- 2:00- I teach my children and some slave children there numbers and how to write.
2:30- 5:00- The children run to find there friends so they can play and I usually stay in to watch the baby.
5:45- 6:30- Its dinner time everyone tidies up while one of our house slaves makes a wonderful dinner.
8:00-9:00- its bath and shower time everyone cleans up and gets ready for bed and start over again.
I'm sorry you had to leave so early. It really upset Earl and the children when you had to leave last night. The letter said January 1863 but I guess they need you sooner than that. I love you brother and I hope you get to come back soon.Your doing a great thing fighting for standing up for what we believe in your such a brave young boy. Earl, the children and I wish you the best of luck and to let you know we will be here for you when you get back. I hope you fought your heart out in Battle of Antietam. We send you much loves and we will pray for you.

8:00 A.M. - I wake up and go down stairs to find the children down there eating breakfast that a house slave made.
9:30 A.M.- 11:00 A.M.- I wake up from the nap I took after breakfast.
11:30- I go down stairs and the kids are gone they are playing with the slave children.
12:00- I manage to make the kids a sandwich and then I end up going back upstairs to my room.
2:00- 4:00- I ended up going to see baby Ethan I was there for 2 hours and I cried because I missed my brother.
6:00 P.M.- I drag myself out of bed to help with dinner its the least I could do for the house slaves and the children.
8:00- After dinner I go back to bed and end up sleeping for the rest of the night.
My Brother wrote me today!!! I'm very existed to see what he has to say. I just hope that hes alright. I miss him more than anything.
Dear Marry Jane,
Thank you for the prays and all the love. I miss you terribly and i'm on my way home. I had my leg amputated I was shot in the foot but I also saved another soldiers life. There will be a party for me when I get back. Ill be home in two to three weeks I can't wait to see you and my nieces and nephews. You are a wonderful sister Ill see you soon.
