Buddhism is the fourth largest religion in the world. There are over 360,000,000 Buddhist in the world. China has the most Buddhist followers. 95% of the Thailand population is Buddhist. The man who became known as Buddha was born a prince 2,000 years ago. His name was Siddhartha Gautama. The lotus flower is one of the main symbols in Buddhism. Buddha traveled around North India for over 45 years, teaching his message to the people. There are many aspects of Hinduism are in Buddhism. A state of mind that is free from craving is called Nirvana. Buddhists believe in reincarnation. All Buddhist temples contain an image or a statue of the Buddha. Lumbini, Nepal, is said to be Buddha's birthplace. The Dhamekh Stupa is one of the oldest Stupas in the world. Theravada is the teachings of the elders. Mahayana is another form of teaching that is more widespread in Eastern Asia.

Buddhists don't believe in a God. They believe in Nirvana. Nirvana is a state in which there is no suffering, desire, or sense of self. When a Buddhist reaches Nirvana, they are released from the affects of karma and the cycle of death and birth. Nirvana is the final goal of Buddhism.

The Buddhists' sacred writing is the Tripitaka. In the Tripitaka, it is said that Mahāyāna sūtras such as the Prajñāparamitā and others are chanted by the Aparaśailas and the Pūrvaśailas.

Above is the religious symbol for Buddhism. The lotus flower, Wheel of Law, the Bodhi tree, and Buddha's foot prints are also several symbols.

Buddhists worship in their sacred place, also known as Stupas.

A few Buddhist holidiays are Vesak (Buddha's birthday), Magha Puja, Bohi Day, Loy Krathong, and Madhu Purnima.

Buddhism is a religion that revolves around oneself, their mind, and happiness. Buddha, sometimes referred to as Lord Buddha, was a prince named Siddhartha Gautama. He saw there was struggle in the world, and left his royal family. He worked to reach Nirvana. He traveled for 45 years, before finally passing on, teaching people of Nirvana, and ways to reach it. He is known as the Buddha, but he said there will be another Buddha some day.
