How has American society been represented in "Supersize Me"?
"Supersize me" is a documentary by Morgan Spurlock and is his construction of American society. He shows Americans as overweight, lazy, arrogant people and in my opinion is not far from the truth. Americans are getting fatter and fatter every day. The number of obese people in America is rising dramatically just like the number of McDonald's stores popping up in suburbs. Since 1980, the amount of children who are obese has doubled. Obesity is now second only to smoking as a major cause of preventable death in America with over 400,000 preventable illnesses related to obesity each year. Over 100 million Americans are overweight or obsess and 60% of all US adults are overweight or obsess. This increase in obesity of Americans is so alarming that medical authorities are labeling it an 'epidemic'.
Its not just the Adults that are the fat ones it is the younger generations as well. One out of every 3 children born in 2000, if trends continue, will develop diabetes in their life. In Morgan Spurlock documentary he focuses on children quite a bit with the opening scene - happy kids singing about fast food. Spurlock goes to a primary school to interrogate the students about iconic figures in America and the results are indeed shocking which is shown in the video below. The most commonly known figure that children can identify is Ronald McDonald and its not their fault either. It is just the society they are raised in & having poor role models, they know no better.
The average child sees 10,000 food advertisements each year on TV. 95% of those ads are for sugared cereals, soft drinks, and candy. Kids are just sucked into loving fast food, especially McDonald's. Maccas sinks millions of dollars into their advertising campaign and appeal to the kids with a number of slick advertisements in kids' playgrounds. McDonalds have also captured the market with kid's birthday parties. Children can have their own McDonald’s Party which consists of a variety of McHappy Meals which is appealing to kids, not to mention Ronald McDonald, the clown.
With so many McDonald stores in America it is so convenient for Americans to walk into Maccas and buy a big mac than it is to put any effort in to looking after their health and eating properly or cooking a healthy meal at home. With 40% of Americans eating out, you can understand why they are obese.
McDonald's are not going to shut up shop because they feel bad about selling unhealthy food. They make too much money to care.
Americans are going to have to change their ways or just like car company's increasing the size of the cup holders in cars to accommodate the bigger McDonald's drink sizes, we are going to also increase door sizes to allow all the obese people through but Maccas are probably already thinking about implementing that themselves.
