Cause of Disease

  • Leprosy is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae

Transmission of Disease

  • Close Physical contact with an untreated person, and through nasal mucous

How contagious

  • Not every contagious

How virulent is the disease

  • If not treated can be hard to get rid of, may even lose extremities due to repeated harm


  • Decreased sensation to touch
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Numbness

How to test for it

  • Skin Biopsy
  • Skin Smear Test


  • Antibiotics, if detected early

How successful is the treatment

  • With no treatment people have 4 times greater chance of dying from the disease
  • 7 deaths for every 100,000
