Epic Hero and Epic Poetry
By: Mark Contreras
Epic: a long narrative poem in elevated style recounting the deeds of a legendary or historical hero
An epic is a long, dramatic narrative which typically depicts a hero going on a long and dangerous journey, and facing many obstacles to reach his/her ultimate goal, whether it is to defeat an enemy or to travel to a certain place or city. The first epics were passed down from generation to generation by telling the whole story and acting it out as a play. Because of this, the published version of many of the first epics are slightly modified from the original version. Most epics tend to contain long speeches, and a protagonist who ebodies characteristics which the people greatly value such as bravery, wisdom and integrity.
