WARNING: A disease called tuberculosis is caused by the infectious agent known as Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. It is a rod shaped bacterium that is small and slow growing that can only live in people. It is NOT found in other animals, insects, soils nor any other non living thing. Mycobacterium Tuberculosis is a intracellular parasite and also an aerobic bacterium - meaning it needs oxygen to survive. Usually it is found in the upper sacs of the lungs.
Though Tuberculosis attacks the lungs, it can also target the kidney, spine and brain to a fatal degree. It is spread by droplet transmission (when a infected patient coughs or sneezes) - Make sure you keep your distance! If you are exposed to an infected individual, one can acquire TB through breathing the bacteria in the air. Humans ARE the reservoirs for this bacterium.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Signs and symptoms depend on the extent to which the illness has spread. However:
- chronic cough (for 3 weeks or longer
- low grade fever
- night sweats
- weight loss

TB mostly affects young adults. However, all ages are at risk for this disease.
