Eugene Lee

Eugene Lee was born on the 9th of March, 1939 in Beloit, Wisconsin. He lives in Providence with his wife and together, they raised 2 sons. He attended high school at Beloit Memorial, in which his studies were very successful. Eugene became a scenic designer, graduating from both the Art Institute of Chicago and Carnegie Mellon University with BFA degrees. On top of that, he also has a MFA from Yale Drama School and not only a PhD but 3 honourary ones! At the age of 28, in 1967, he became a resident at Trinity Rep; a non-profit regional theatre located in Providence, Rhode Island. There, he designed sets for the shows and everyone thought that he did an outstanding job. Eugene has won 3 Tony Awards for designing the set of Candide, Sweeney Todd and Wicked. Along with that, he has won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design. With his qualifications, he is also a professor at Brown University.

Eugene Lee is also the production designer of Saturday Night Live. He is working on making it look more detailed. Some other well known and successful sets that he has designed are Alice In Wonderland, The Normal Heart, Ragtime, Wicked, The Pirate Queen and much more. He has also designed some sets in films such as Vanya on 42nd Street.

Eugene loves working at Trinity Rep and wants to keep designing sets there until he can’t move his hands anymore. When designing sets, he prefers to build it out of real materials. He says, ‘There is some kind of humanity to it, some kind of history to the planks.’ When asked ‘What do you enjoy most in your work?’, he simply replied, ‘Nothing makes me happier than an impossible space and an impossible project.'
