In the 2014 World Cup, the US were expected to be eliminated easily in the first round. As a country with little success in soccer, the US were thought to have no chance against world class countries such as Ghana, Portugal, and Germany. Although the US didn't make it past the round of 16, they still managed to get out of the group of death. The group of death included the World Cup champions, Germany, Portugal with Cristiano Ronaldo, the best player in the world, and Ghana, Africa's best soccer country. The US was predicted to finish last in the group. Clint Dempsy surprised the world with an extremely early goal against Ghana and people started to gain hope for the US. The US shocked the world once again when they got out of the group. This is an extremly important accomplishment for our nation because we have gained respect in the world's most popular game. The US's head coach, Jurgen Klinsmann explains, "We are excited seeing soccer breaking through or just getting a lot of recognition in the United States now." Jurgen and the rest of the US soccer team are now getting much more respect. Yugen explains how soccer is getting bigger when he states, "That all shows you that soccer’s breaking through". The 2014 World Cup was a major milestone for US soccer.
