Pheonix Concrete Poem

All decisions in life have consequences later. Children don’t have the foresight to see consequences because they don’t have the history to understand what type of effects decisions in life can have. “Its a shame youth is wasted on the young” really means its a shame because it seems that life is an inverse relationship. As you gain experience and knowledge your opportunity diminishes. Every person in the world has at least one thing they wish they would have done differently when they were young at some point.

As people get older they start to see the effects of these decisions. They would do anything to take it back and always say if only they could change that their life would be better. If only they would have tried harder in school they would have life so much easier and it would have inspired them to do other things and try harder.

Then once people get older they start to realize that yes those things might have made their life better, but they wouldn’t put them where they are now. Those decisions might have made them better at the time, but they could have put them in a worse place. Thats the beauty and downfall of life. All decisions have consequences and there is no way to tell what those consequences might be.

"Photograph"

Look at this photograph
Every time I do it makes me laugh
How did our eyes get so red?
And what the hell is on Joey's head?

And this is where I grew up
I think the present owner fixed it up
I never knew we'd ever went without
The second floor is hard for sneaking out

And this is where I went to school
Most of the time had better things to do
Criminal record says I broke in twice
I must have done it half a dozen times

I wonder if it's too late
Should I go back and try to graduate?
Life's better now than it was back then
If I was them I wouldn't let me in

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, god, I

Every memory of looking out the back door
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye.
Every memory of walking out the front door
I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye.

Remember the old arcade
Blew every dollar that we ever made
The cops hated us hangin' out
They say somebody went and burned it down

We used to listen to the radio
And sing along with every song we know
We said someday we'd find out how it feels
To sing to more than just the steering wheel

Kim's the first girl I kissed
I was so nervous that I nearly missed
She's had a couple of kids since then
I haven't seen her since god knows when

Oh, oh, oh

I miss that town
I miss the faces
You can't erase
You can't replace it
I miss it now
I can't believe it
So hard to stay
Too hard to leave it

If I could I relive those days
I know the one thing that would never change

Every memory of looking out the back door
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye.
Every memory of walking out the front door
I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye.

Look at this photograph
Every time I do it makes me laugh
Every time I do it makes me...

The narrator was an Appreciative Soul

In this piece there is one major conflict and that is that the man has to learn to deal with the passage of time. How to have memories and deal with the fact that he can't go back

Allusion-"Memory of looking out the back door"-This is said to connect with the audience as most people have similar memories.

Idiom-"Blew every dollar"-This is said to add emphasis and lighten the mood of the song

Allusion-"Should I go back and try to graduate"-This is the narrator questioning some of the decisions he made earlier in his life

Symbolism-

I would chose a photo album to symbolize this song, not only because it is mentioned in the song, but also because it shows memories, decisions, and the consequences of those decisions in a visual manner.

Imagery-

The line in this song that best creates an image in my head is "Every memory of walking out the back door". This is because it can connect with just about anyone. It is very specific in what it wants someone to imagine and it is something that almost anyone can relate to, and conjure an image of.
