Battle of Pearl Harbor

By Anakin White

On December 7, 1941, the Pearl Harbor naval base on Hawaii was attacked by Japan. The battle had been a surprise attack and was followed by the US entering WWII. The attack was intended to keep the US pacific fleet from interfering with the Japanese military. Japan had sent 353 fighter jets to attack the base. They were launched in two waves from six Japanese aircraft carriers.  All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged and four were sunk. Each battleship except the Arizona were later raised and six of the eight battleships were returned to service and went on to fight in the war. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, a anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer. Also 188 US aircraft were destroyed. 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 were wounded. The Japanese lost 29 aircraft, 5 midget submarines, and 65 pilots.

Pearl Harbor is the reason the US joined the war. Japan later surrendered after the US dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese city's Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
