Chester Cross of Maryland - Working at Startup Tech

Working at a Startup is exciting, invigorating and challenging. However, it's not for everyone, and it comes with challenges that could break your soul. If you're comfortable with the possibility of losing your soul then understand that you will need to be able to adapt to change. Change is always lurking around your cubicle, and if you can't adjust, you will sink. You might have plans one evening to meet a friend or see a family member. Then within minutes, without notice, those plans will change because our VP is telling you we have a fire drill, and it's all hands on deck. You have to be a team player who is willing to take on tasks that may not fit into your job description.

If you plan to work at a startup, look for a mentor. Find the most successful people in that organization, friend them and observe everything they do. The most successful startup companies are the companies that can adapt quickly and move in agile manner. This method means keeping your headcount light, your campaigns and business efforts should also be flexible to change. After all, a startup is constantly testing and researching its business practices. It's your job as an employee or manager to assess risk at all costs. Not every human has the DNA to work at a startup and be successful. If you just want a job where you clock in and clock out, then you'll want to look elsewhere.
