Camp Life

Dear Mom,

It sucks here. all we do is drills. I want to come home. I am thinking about running away but I don't want to get in trouble. If its not too much of a problem I would like you to send me some lemon bars. The last ones were very good. Thanks. Bye.

Jeremiah Hanley Questions

1. Jeremiah when you chose to stay home with your mother what caused you to make that choice.

I was worried that my mom wouldn't make it. I stayed home because maybe if I helped take care of her she would be back to full health. I tried to help her as much as I could but it wasn't enough. In the end I just wish James could have stayed to help

2. Jeremiah, looking back what is something in your life that you are proud or happy about?

I am proud that I chose to fight for the Union side rather than the Southern side. If I would have chose the South side then I may have died. Plus If I joined the South I would have lost the war.

3. Jeremiah, what is one thing about your life you wish had been different?

I wish I would have stayed to fight with my brother. I haven't seen him ever sense he left. I miss him and I wish he were still here. I hope he isn't dead.

4. Jeremiah, why did you choose to fight in the army rather than helping runaway slaves get to freedom?

I was worried that if I helped runaway slaves I might get caught and I wouldn't be able to help anyone else. So I thought that I could help by joining the army and fighting for my cause. I also wanted to see if I could find my brother out on the battlefield

I love playing cards with my friends

Camp Fun

Dear Friend,

Camp life is so fun. We constantly play games and talk. We even drink. We are not supposed to but we do it anyway. We have so much free time we can pretty much do whatever we want. My favorite food is bacon. Its pieces of pig meat fried in a pan. It sounds really weird but its actually one of he best food in the world.

The confederates are coming”

Steven: Okay i’m ready

Colby: Me too, but first let me eat my goobers.

One time i was eatin my peas

oh yeah

they tasted so good

tasted so good

then the confederates came started shooting at us

shootin at us

we were firing back and we ran out ammo

out of ammo

so I used my peas and shot em all

em all

The peas didnt work, and we all died

all died

all died That's how we won the war

1862 was when it happened.

The south wanted slaves

The union wanted freedom

the South lost

the Union won.

The battle field

I've never seen anything more horrid in my life. I couldn't even sleep because of all the people screaming. At first it wasn't that bad but then we ran out of chloroform so they had to just amputate like that. The hospitals were crowded and only half the people that went in came back out. I'm so happy I didn't get hurt. I would rather wait on the battle field injured rather than try to be fixed by our doctors. I saw one doctor give a patient some weird juice. Next thing you know he died from that juice.

The pillow I wish I had to remember my fam

Letter home

I can't believe I'm home. My family has changed so much. My kids aren't little anymore. It's just so hard to believe the war is over and we won. I never thought this day would come. Finally we get what we want. NO MORE SLAVERY!!!
