Back in July, I attended a conference with the Tell Project and our state world languages association. We were challenged to create a goal for our class this year. My goal is to teach and use materials 90% of the time in the target language. This would mean we would speak completely in Spanish for about 25 minutes each class! It is a big goal but I know we can do it. I am so excited about reaching this goal. We are working hard every day to be able to communicate in Spanish.
Our Elementary Spanish department will be attending a national conference on teaching world languages in November. In February, we will be presenting at our state conference. We are very excited about the upcoming opportunities to grow our program and learn how to better serve our students.
First grade has been studying about Spain. We have learned all about the Nina and the Pinta. They were in Hunstville over fall break!

What's the buzz at Mill Creek??
In kindergarten we have been learning so much! Each class starts by singing our good morning song in Spanish. Then, we always have our introduction where we practice our greetings/leavings, verbs, etc. We have learned how to introduce ourselves in Spanish and we started working on our portfolios for this year. We are studying Mexico this year and we have already learned about the Aztecs and their connection to Mexico's flag. We even watched a video of kids that traveled to Mexico and climbed a big pyramid. How cool!
First grade has been a blast! We have started studying about Spain and we learned about the story of Ferdinand the Bull. We have reviewed a lot of the skills that were learned last year. We learned new greetings and new verbs that were added to our introduction. We even learned some of our classroom items in Spanish. We had a lot of fun playing rock, paper, scissors in Spanish!
In 2nd grade we started our year off by reviewing and learning classroom objects in Spanish. We had a great song that helped us and we even learned how to play rock, paper, scissors in Spanish. That was a blast! We have been playing a lot of fun games that help us grow our vocabulary. We have also learned more new verbs to add to our introduction.
Take a look at some of the fun we have had.
What is coming up next??
Numbers 1 - 10, Dia de los Muertos, Brown Bear, Brown Bear unit (Colors and animals)
Numbers 1 - 20, Christopher Columbus, The Artist that Painted a Blue Horse (Colors and animals)

Class behavior and participation will be tracked using Class Dojo. During Spanish, the entire class will receive points for doing positive things or they can have points taken away for negative behaviors. The teacher will receive a progress report after the class with notes about the points that were received or taken away. There will be rewards when the students reach 25 points, 50 points, 100 points, and 200 points.
Shout out to the classes that have already reached 25 points!!!
We had a dance party and no socks Spanish day!
