Types of Bonds

Ionic Bonds are when atoms either transfer, or share their valence electrons.

For example, when one or more atoms lose electrons, and the other gains electrons to produce a noble gas configuration.

Characteristics

1) appearance is powdery or granular

2) it dissolves in water

3) doesn't have a melting point

4) it has no conductivity as a solid, but it does as a liquid

Covalent bonds

Covalent bonds  Is when two or more pairs of electrons are shared by two atoms. The relationship is between two non-metals

Characteristics

1) appearance is powdery or granular

2) dissolves in water

3) has a melting point

4) doesn't dissolve in water

5) it doesn't have conductivity in solids or liquids

Metallic bonds

Is the attraction between metal atoms that are delocalized

The relationship is metal to metal

Characteristics

1)appearance is shiny

2) doesn't melt in water

3) doesn't have a melting point

4) doesn't dissolve in water

5) it has conductivity in solids and liquids
