Civil War Curators-ROOM 9

This is a snare drum used during the Civil War. It was used In the past because there was not the sophisticated communication equipment that is used in battle today.  the The drummer played the drum to relay movements and battle orders.

Battle drums were extremely important in how the battle would go via the orders given and executed by the men in the battle carrying them out. All the troops were taught the various drum beats played by the battle drummer and what they meant so they could execute the orders given. These drums of war had to cut through the noise of battle so that the troops could hear what they were to do next. The battle drummer played his drum with a pair of drum sticks to create the volume needed to cut through the noise. If the battle was extremely noisy then several drummers would play at once .

The drum is useful today, but just as a form of entertainment. Now we have the ability to fight wars while sitting in a control room, so we definitely don't need drums anymore.

In the Civil War,the men had to wear certain type of shoes to wear to be able to fight in the war.Men had to wear thick, blackened leather with heavy leather soles and the heels tacked together with wooden pegs or stitched with thick thread.

The men had to practice using the shoes before the war start because they going to be running and jumping everywhere in the war so they don't feel uncomfortable during the war.

The Civil War shoes are not useful today because we are not having a Civil War again.

This is a Boosey & Hawkes Marching French Horn it was given a serial number which is how we know it was made in 1954.
In the civil war they used the Boosey & Hawkes Marching French Horn in the band group to play music. The French Horn was made in England and is marked as imperial. The French Horn was given a nickname and some people refer to it as a "frumpet." They made it so the horn can play the F key. They would use the Horn in school marching bands. The horn is 27 inches long and the bell is only 12 1/2 inches long. The horn was not commonly seen before the 1960's and 1970's. The french horn is still used today in military bands and other marching bands.
