Walt Whitman

One of the most AWESOME poets from the nineteenth century!

Walt Whitman was born in Long Island NY and grew up in Brooklyn. He was born on May 31st 1819. He had little education but had some titles such as school teacher, reporter, and editor. He self published Leaves of Grass in 1855 which was a collection of his poetry. He rewrote Leaves of Grass many times, going back and revising. He did this until his death in March of 1892 in Camden New Jersey.

Poem number 1: To You
LET us twain walk aside from the rest;
Now we are together privately, do you discard ceremony,
Come! vouchsafe to me what has yet been vouchsafed to none—Tell me the whole story,
Tell me what you would not tell your brother, wife, husband, or physician.

I choose this poem because it has a deeper meaning and it relates to me deeply as a person.

This poem is a little more loose with scansion.

The theme for this poem is deeper truth.

In "The Rabbit Boy" it relates because when the boy, that is raised by the rabbits" goes into town he is in love with the beautiful girl that Ikatomi also is in love with.

American Romanticism Characteristics: Values feelings

Poem number 2: America
Centre of equal daughters, equal sons,All, all alike endear’d, grown, ungrown, young or old,Strong, ample, fair, enduring, capable, rich,Perennial with the Earth, with Freedom, Law and Love,A grand, sane, towering, seated Mother,Chair’d in the adamant of Time.

I choose this poem because I do love my america and i think it is a great poem.

The scansion on this poem is like the other which is kind of loose.

The theme for this poem is a description of what america "should" be like.

The selection that relates the most to this was President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address speech and they relate because both are about what america "should" do or "should" be like.

American romanticism characteristics: Individual freedom, and distrust of progress.
